Before buying boards, identify where they will be installed and what they need to do. A ceiling lining, cabinet panel and decorative wall panel have different requirements. Start with the application, then compare moisture exposure, support, fixing methods, finish and the cost of completing the job. 1. Compare the main board types Board type Main characteristics Typical uses What to check Gypsum board A gypsum-based core, commonly paper-faced, that provides a smooth surface for decoration. Interior ceilings, partitions and wall linings. Standard, moisture-resistant and specialist boards have different applications. Confirm the board and its complete framing and jointing system. Fibre-cement board / Ficem board Cement reinforced with fibres. Products are made for different ceiling, wall and other applications. Ceilings and wall linings; wet-area or exterior applications where the specific product is approved. Intended use, thickness, support requirements, fasteners and joint treatment. A ceiling board should not automatically replace a wall board. Plywood Layers of wood veneer bonded together, generally with alternating grain directions. Furniture, cabinets and joinery; building substrates where the product has suitable documented performance. Grade, core quality, thickness, bond durability, surface protection and treatment of cut edges. Medium-density fibreboard / MDF Wood fibres bonded with resin, producing a uniform material suitable for machining and finishing. Painted cabinet doors, drawer fronts, mouldings and interior decorative work. Standard or moisture-resistant grade, finishing requirements, edge protection and compatibility with the intended fittings. Particle board / Chipboard Wood particles bonded into panels, often supplied with a decorative surface. Cabinet carcasses, office furniture and other interior furniture components. Dry-use or moisture-resistant grade, edging, shelf support and hardware connections. PVC ceiling panels PVC panels commonly supplied with a finished surface and an interlocking profile. Interior ceilings and covered exterior ceilings where permitted by the product instructions. Exposure limits, support, fixing requirements and compatibility with the installation location. WPC decorative wall panels A wood-plastic composite, commonly supplied with wood-look or fluted finishes. Accent walls, decorative wall coverings and suitable exterior cladding products. Whether the product is intended for indoor or outdoor use, plus weathering, fixing and trim requirements. Images are AI-generated material illustrations. Actual products and profiles may vary. These are material categories. Products within the same category can have different specifications and permitted uses. 2. Understand the names on a quotation Marine plywood is still plywood. Ask which grade or standard the product claims to meet and request information about its veneers, core and adhesive bond. The word “marine” alone does not establish resistance to decay or termites, or suitability for prolonged immersion without protection. Melamine board describes a surface finish. The core may be particle board or MDF. A quotation should identify both the core and the finish. MFC means melamine-faced chipboard; it should not be confused with melamine-faced MDF. Moisture-resistant does not automatically mean waterproof. A board suitable for humid air may have different limitations from one approved for direct water exposure. Check the exact product’s permitted use, surface protection and joint details. Board selection also does not replace repairing a leak. Thin HPL and compact laminate are different products. Thin high-pressure laminate is a decorative surfacing material bonded to a suitable substrate. Compact laminate is a different panel product with its own thickness, support and fixing requirements. Specify which one is required rather than requesting only “HPL board.” 3. Choose by application Use the following as a starting point, then have the installer confirm the exact product and construction details. Application Options to compare Key decision Smooth, painted living-room or bedroom ceiling Ceiling-grade gypsum board or fibre-cement board. Required finish, framing, joint treatment and complete installed cost. Bathroom ceiling A suitable moisture-resistant gypsum board, fibre-cement ceiling board or PVC ceiling panel. Humidity versus direct wetting, ventilation and the product’s exposure limits. Shower wall or tile backing A board explicitly approved for the intended wet-area tiling system. Waterproofing, joints, penetrations, tile adhesive and fixing details. Wardrobe or storage cabinet carcass Faced plywood, faced MDF or MFC. Moisture conditions, shelf spans, hardware connections, core grade and edging. Painted or profiled cabinet door MDF suitable for the environment and finishing process. Machining, coating, edge protection, door dimensions and fittings. Wood-look or fluted accent wall Interior-grade WPC decorative panels. Appearance, supporting surface, fixings, trims and any planned attachments. Exterior decorative wall or soffit Products explicitly approved for the actual exterior exposure. Sun, rain, wind, weathering, fixing and edge details. For fire resistance, acoustic performance or load-bearing applications, select a documented assembly. Board thickness alone does not establish the performance of the completed construction. Different parts of a cabinet can also use different materials. The carcass may be selected for support and connections, while the door is selected for its appearance and finish. Areas near a sink need a separate review of moisture exposure and protection. 4. Compare complete costs First confirm that the proposed products meet the same requirements. Then compare: Board type, grade, thickness and actual sheet dimensions. Required framing, fasteners, adhesives and accessories. Jointing, edging and surface preparation. Paint, laminate or other finishing work. Cutting, installation labour, tax, delivery and unloading. A lower price per sheet may reflect a smaller sheet or a different specification. Compare the cost of completing the same area or the same cabinet, including the materials and work each option requires. 5. Send a clear quotation request Give every supplier the same application and exposure information. You can use this request: Please quote boards for [location and application], with exposure to [dry conditions / humidity / direct water / sun and rain]. State the board type, product reference or grade, thickness, actual sheet dimensions, core and finish where applicable, and quantity. Provide the permitted uses and installation instructions. List fixings, jointing or edging materials, finishing work, delivery and taxes separately. Identify the specification differences of any proposed alternative. At delivery, check the product identification, dimensions, quantity and condition. Record damaged edges, cracks, delamination or signs of moisture damage before use, and follow the product’s handling and storage instructions. Confirm the selected product’s technical information and installation requirements before ordering.
